History of KingmanKingman Arizona was founded in 1882 as a simple railroad siding along the newly constructed route of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. Arizona can boast the longest stretch of Route 66 still in existence between Chicago and Los Angeles. Beginning just west of Ashfork and continuing from Seligman through Peach Springs, this stretch of the original road positions Kingman as the "Heart of Historic Route 66."Camp Beale Springs was established in 1871 by Company F, 12th U.S. Infantry out of Fort Whipple. Initially, the camp provided continued protection along the Fort Mojave and Prescott Toll Road and acted as a feeding and supply station for the Hualapai Indians. The camp remained active until April 6, 1874, when the Hualapai Indians were forced to leave for a reservation. After 1874, the springs again became a campsite/way station on the toll road. The site remained active well into the Twentieth Century. Activities in and around the springs have included ranching/farming, a way station hotel, ore milling, a water works and mining. Today, you can still enjoy a picnic there in the quiet atmosphere or do some hiking. Locomotive Park is home to famed steam engine #3759. Built in 1928 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Eddystone, PA, Engine No. 3759, a coal burning steam locomotive and was in use for more than 20 years, before it was retired by the Santa Fe Railroad and was then rebuilt to run on oil. Engine No. 3759 was presented to the City of Kingman by the Santa Fe Railroad in 1957 as a historical monument. Kingman was founded as a railroad settlement and a monument in the park pays tribute to those who forged the route, such as the wagon trails of the early settlers and the surveys of Lt. Edward Beale. Today, visitors may get up close and examine this marvel of earlier locomotive structure and design while listening to the modern trains whizzing by on the nearby railroad tracks. The beautiful shady park is also a popular relaxation spot for both tourists and Kingmanites. Recreation and Local AttractionsOur city straddles the scenic Hualapai, Cerbat and Black Mountains, which offer hiking, picnicking, camping, and other outdoor activities in the cool pines. The Kingman and Colorado River areas offer a unique range of recreational and historical attractions as do several ghost towns in the area. The rivers and lakes offer fishing along with boating and other forms of water-oriented recreation. Grand Canyon Caverns
The Park contains several major ecosystems. The Park also serves as an ecological refuge, with relatively undisturbed remnants of dwindling ecosystems. It is home to numerous rare, endemic (found only at Grand Canyon), and threatened/endangered plant and animal species. Over 1,500 plant, 355 bird, 89 mammalian, 47 reptile, 9 amphibian, and 17 fish species are found in the park. The oldest human artifacts found are nearly 12,000 years old and date to the Paleo-Indian period. There has been continuous archeological use and occupation of the park since that time.
